After receiving a mysterious message from Mr. Pokimon,
Professor Elm asked his young friend and neighbor, Gold, to investigate. Professor Elm was
simply too preoccupied with his research to find out what Mr. Pokimon was willing to show
him, so Gold would have to be the courier. Gold was also given the opportunity to choose
one of three Pokimon to take with him - his first!
While Gold was deciding on his companion, a boy lurked in
the shadows intently watching the proceedings. Once discovered, the boy pushed Gold aside
and angrily told him to leave him alone. What was this bully up to? And what new discovery
is Mr. Pokimon talking about? These are the questions you must answer as you embark on
another journey into the world of Pokimon.
A continuation of Nintendo's successful franchise,
Pokimon Gold lets users once again try their skills at becoming the world's greatest
Pokimon trainer. For those new to the series, gameplay involves collecting and then
fighting creatures called Pokimon as you challenge other trainers for their special
badges. A secondary goal is to collect the entire roster of 250 Pokimon creatures.
Playing the role of a young boy, you must travel from
city to city, talking to people, entering buildings, solving puzzles, finding items, and
testing your mettle against rival trainers looking to humiliate you. In order to win a
fight, you'll need to form a balanced team of Pokimon that can stand up to whatever your
rival dishes out. Succeed and your creatures will grow in experience, learning new
abilities and possibly evolving into more powerful types.
Pokimon Gold features an internal clock that can
influence which Pokimon you see depending on the time you play. Also included are special
events that occur only on certain days - in order to participate in them, you must play
the game on that day. As in previous titles, players may save at any point during their
travels and later continue where they left off.
In addition to the clock, new features that distinguish
Pokimon Gold from earlier versions are dozens of new Pokimon, two new types (Dark and
Steel), a new world to explore, and additional evolutions for older Pokimon. Pokimon can
also hold items to help during combat, and the hero now has access to a map, phone, radio
and more thanks to the wrist-mounted Pokigear.
In order to collect all of the monsters, you will need to
trade with owners of the separate Pokimon Silver. The differences between the two games
are negligible, however; other than the frequency of certain types of Pokimon, both titles
play exactly the same and feature identical storylines.
Pokimon Gold is backwards compatible with the other
versions of the game, meaning you can trade with owners of Pokimon Red, Pokimon Blue, and
Pokimon Yellow, but the new creatures are exclusive to the Game Boy Color cartridges and
cannot be transferred to the older versions.
